H5n1 Bird Flu Mortality Rate

H5N1 Bird Flu Alert: Widespread Outbreaks in the US

Threatening Pandemic Potential

As avian influenza sweeps across the United States, infecting wild birds, poultry, and even dairy cows, concerns mount about its potential to pose a significant health threat. H5N1, a strain of the bird flu virus, has recently spread to dozens of countries, raising fears of a global pandemic.

History and Recent Cases

Since 2003, H5N1 has infected 889 people worldwide, with 463 fatalities. In recent months, new human cases have emerged, prompting the CDC to issue an updated technical report.

Spread and Symptoms

H5N1 spreads primarily through contact with infected birds or their secretions. Symptoms in humans can include fever, cough, muscle aches, and respiratory distress. In severe cases, the virus can cause pneumonia, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), and multi-organ failure.

Treatment and Prevention

There is no specific treatment for H5N1, but antiviral medications can be used to manage symptoms. Prevention revolves around avoiding contact with infected birds and practicing good hygiene measures, such as frequent handwashing.
