WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest women's soccer team continued its impressive start to the season on Thursday night, upsetting top-ranked Stanford 1-0 at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games, while Stanford suffered its first loss of the season.
Wake Forest struck early, taking the lead just one minute into the match. Ally Sentnor received a pass from Giovanna DeMarco and fired a shot from outside the box that found the back of the net. The goal was Sentnor's first of the season and proved to be the game-winner.
Stanford had several chances to equalize, but the Wake Forest defense held strong. The Cardinal outshot the Demon Deacons 14-9 but managed only two shots on target. Wake Forest goalkeeper Maddie Hinchliffe made two saves to earn her fifth clean sheet of the season.
The victory was a significant one for Wake Forest, which is now 7-0-3 on the season. The Demon Deacons have defeated three ranked opponents this year, including No. 1 Stanford, No. 6 South Carolina, and No. 11 Virginia.
Wake Forest will look to continue its winning ways on Sunday when it hosts No. 8 North Carolina in a top-10 matchup.
